We at BYH have committed to doing Dry July this year! To kick things off we thought why not start the month with a three day juice cleanse, our first ever juice cleanse. Here is how it went from his and her perspective...
DAY 1 (cue Law & Order music)
Coming from an Italian family where we think about what we are going to eat for dinner while we are still having breakfast, I was nervous about not eating solid foods for a whole 3 days. How would I survive? I typically eat every 2 hours of the day, would I make it without a little cheat? How was I going to feel? On Day 1, I was surprised by how much food consumed my life and thoughts. I had so much time back on my hands! I didn’t have to think about what was I going to make for meals, didn’t have to prepare or clean up anything and I didn’t spend time eating throughout the day! I had so much free time! Not only that I was surprisingly feeling pretty good. Minus the constant thought of food.
For me, day one required a lot of encouragement from Amanda. I woke up with the positive feeling that I would take on this cleanse head first and resist any temptation for food. The first smoothie of the day, Green Guru is a filling and delicious juice. It’s certainly enough to get you through the early morning until you step up to the Turmeric juice around 10am. By around about midday, I could feel my stomach crying out for solid food. As Amanda got to experience, my ‘Hangry’ mood was lifting and made the afternoon quite interesting! The rest of the afternoon and into the evening I couldn’t stop thinking of food every minute of every hour. I’m used to eating every two hours, generally quite healthy, so consuming nothing but liquid was bizarre to me. I was very excited to get to my evening smoothie, Cashew Chai which is absolutely incredible and quite the perfect end to a challenging day.
When I woke up my skin was looking pretty mars like, I could feel the toxins creeping out of my skin. I was feeling pretty full of energy, surprisingly and did a yoga class and a costal walk. I was feeling great considering Day Two is meant to be the hardest, but I found I was less hungry and not thinking about food nearly as much as the day before! I didn’t make it through all my juices on Day 1 and still didn’t make it through on Day Two. How is my body doing this? I normally would have eaten so much by now! I was surprised to see how I was functioning without solid food…although I did miss chewing? Weird huh?
Rolling into day two I felt like this cleanse had been going a week already. It’s not so much that I was hungry by the morning of Day Two, but it was the fact I had not been physically chewing anything. We decided to get out of the house and take a long walk along to coast for the afternoon. Taking a few breaks and keeping our juices on ice, it was refreshing taking in the ocean air on a beautiful Bondi day. I was still zapped of energy though and really struggling to start conversation, think and keep up the long walk. Then we decided to head to Orchard Street for an afternoon treat. I took no time to select the Vitality Cacao Elixir, a boost of energy that was very much needed. It was nice to have something hot to consume rather than cold juices. Heading home we did meditation and the rest of the day chilling out on the couch with the dog. It wasn’t long before my favorite Cashew Chai then soon after hitting the hay.
For me Day Three was HARD! My body just was over juice. I was having trouble getting them down, my energy was low and I was starting to think about food again. It was so close I could taste it. I had felt so good the past two days I was disappointed I was not in top notch form for Day Three. It may have been because I was not drinking all my juices. I wasn’t feeling hungry but I just didn’t want juice, I was ready for solid food. Going to bed on Day Three, I felt like a kid at Christmas waiting for Santa, dreaming of what my first meal would be.
My previous sleeps had been quite disrupted with bizarre dreams, but last night was incredible. You know one of those nights where you sleep like a log...so good! Waking up on Day Three I was feeling incredible. The bags and wrinkles under my eyes had cleared up and surprisingly had quite a bit of energy. I didn’t get through the mid morning Green Garden Juice as we were on the road for the morning, but I did treat myself again to another Cacao Elixir, damn they are good! However, I still felt quite lazy in the afternoon. I had the energy, but not necessarily the motivation or enthusiasm to do anything other than chill.
I woke up feeling great, lots of energy, skin glowing and no longer looking like mars. Surprising I had the best night sleep from all three nights and wasn’t jumping out of bed to eat. We took our time to make a nice breakfast and I ate more mindfully then I have ever done. Really savouring every bite. I think overall this has helped my relationship with food, appreciating it more and really learning to slow down and be more mindful when consuming food.
After having the best night sleep in three days, I woke up with a refreshing skin tone and no bags under my eyes. I felt truly cleansed rejuvenated and quietly excited for my day of clean eating ahead. I think together we appreciate mindful eating and will do our best to slow down in future.
Would I do it again? Definitely but maybe not for a while!
I'm really proud I stuck it out for three days and so happy to feel amazing at the end of it. I'd definitely consider doing it again in the future!
